INDIANAPOLIS - Former Marian University head men's basketball coach John Grimes was recognized on Saturday afternoon for his 36 years of dedicated service to Marian University athletics.
In a pre-game ceremony at the Physical Education Center, Marian University President Daniel J. Elsener officially dedicated John Grimes Court in honor of the coach that manned the sidelines for nearly four decades.
"There is one thing about Coach Grimes that I will always remember," said Elsener. "His favorite day of the year wasn't a specific game, but, in fact, was commencement day when he could see all of the graduating seniors at Marian University. Thank you Coach Grimes for your service to Marian University over the last 36 years."
"This is an great honor and I am so proud," said Grimes. "I have to thank all of the players and everyone here at Marian University. This is such an honor and I am so proud to have my name on this court."
Grimes concluded his career on a high note by guiding the Knights to the 2011-12 NAIA Division II National Championship tournament before announcing his retirement. His teams won 566 career games, earned four national tournament berths, won three league titles and two league tournament titles in his 36 years of coaching.
In addition, Grimes led the department of athletics as director for 26 years. In that time, he oversaw the expansion of the department from five sports to 18 sports before retiring after the 2004-05 season. In his final year, he earned NAIA Region VIII Athletic Director of the Year.
