Commissioner's Corner | Words To Live By

This past week, my son turned 15 years old…

I did not like it!

Aging is not something that bothers me, but somehow watching my children get older does.

Do not get me wrong, I am insanely proud of both of my children and sincerely happy to see them move on in life.  That is my job as a dad, to help prepare them for the future.

I just do not LOVE it.

However, in light of my son's 15th birthday, I want to share some valuable lessons that have helped me!

Advice for my son (and daughter)….

Words to live by:

1. Never shake anyone's hand sitting down.

2. There are plenty of ways to enter a pool. The stairs aren't one of them.

3. The man/woman at the grill is one of the most important at the party.

4. In a negotiation, never make the first offer. NEVER!

5. Act like you've been there before. Especially after scoring a goal or making a "3".

6. Request the late check-out.

7. When entrusted with a secret, KEEP it.

8. Hold your heroes to a higher standard.

9. Return a borrowed car with a full tank of gas.

10. Don't fill up on bread. (this is a tough one for us)

11. When shaking hands, grip firmly and look them in the eye.

12. Don't let a wishbone grow where a backbone should be.

13. If you need music on the beach, you're missing the point.

14. Carry 2 handkerchiefs. One in your back pocket for you. One in the front for her.

15. You marry the girl, you marry her whole family.

16. Be like a duck. Remain calm on the surface and paddle like crazy underneath.

17. Sing loud in the car and shower.

18. Never be afraid to ask out the best girl in the room. (I did)

19. Never turn down a breath mint.

20. In a game of HORSE, sometimes a simple free throw will be enough.

21. A sport coat is worth 1000 words.

22. Try writing your own eulogy. Never stop revising.

23. Thank a veteran. And then make it up to him.

24. Respect authority.

25. Eat lunch with the new kid.

26. After writing an angry email, read it carefully. Then delete it.

27. Ask your mom to play. She won't let you win either.

28. See it on the big screen.

29. Give credit. Take the blame.

30. Write down your dreams.

31. If you're not early, you're already late.

32. Mow your own lawn.  Make sure the lines are straight.

33. Honor your mother always.

34. Pray. OFTEN, and for others.

35. Attend church, read your bible, and listen to the FISH

36. Don't swear.

37. Find good in each person you come across

38. Make time to text your friends. Now. In 10 years. In 20 years, etc

39. Always go out of your way to help someone.  Always!

40. Call your Grandparents often. Tell them how much you love & appreciate them.

41. Always remember how much your mom and I love you!

I must admit, I stole a lot of these!  Just like I have stolen most of the things I know today.

I was blessed with a great dad.  He did not write of say any of these things, just LIVED them daily!

I love being the commissioner of this league. I love being able to watch some really impressive people impact the lives of so many. Our coaches are amazing. Our league is amazing. We are shaping the next generations one practice, play, game, season and career at a time!
