MOBILE, Ala. -- Bethel (Tenn.) College defeated the Indiana Wesleyan University men's tennis team 7-2 in the first round of the NAIA National Championships in Mobile, Alabama.
Indiana Wesleyan sophomore Luke Rasmussen figured in both IWU points against Bethel. Rasmussen won in straight sets in No. 6-singles 6-0, 6-0 and teamed with freshman Luke Montgomery in No. 3-doubles for an 8-5 victory.
Junior Ben Bischoff and sophomore Micah May dropped an 8-2 decision in No. 1-doubles and the No. 2-doubles team of sophomore Matt Pederson and Carson VandenBossche lost 8-6.
In singles play, Pederson lost 6-3, 6-0 in No. 1 singles with Bischoff dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision in No. 2 action. VandenBossche fell 6-0, 6-0 in No. 3 play while May was defeated 6-1, 6-4 in No. 4-singles. In No. 5 competition, Montgomery lost his match 6-4, 6-1.
The season comes to an end with a final record of 15-8. The Wildcats won their fifth Mid-Central College Conference championship in the past seven years with a perfect 7-0 mark. This was the first national tournament appearance for the Wildcats since 2004.
