Magalhaes’ Brace Lifts Spring Arbor Past No. 23 Marian
SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Behind two goals from senior forward David Magalhaes, the Spring Arbor University men's soccer team defeated No. 23 Marian University 2–1 on Saturday afternoon at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
The victory was the Cougars' first over a nationally ranked opponent this season, improving to 9-6-1 overall and 4-2-1 in Crossroads League play.
After a brief weather delay just ten minutes into the match, the Cougars found their rhythm late in the first half. David Magalhaes converted from the penalty spot in the 41st minute, calmly slotting home his seventh goal of the year to send SAU into halftime up 1-0.
The momentum carried into the second half as Guilherme Micaelo set up Magalhaes again in the 58th minute, with the forward finishing from the top of the 18-yard box for his second of the day.
Marian cut the deficit in the 77th minute, but the Spring Arbor back line and goalkeeper Tommy Farrell stood firm over the final stretch.
Farrell and Jack Cristini combined for four saves, helping secure a key league victory in front of the home crowd.
Spring Arbor will play its third straight nationally ranked opponent when it takes on No. 3 Bethel University (11-2-2, 5-1-1 CL) on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
